The Talking Machine – Part 1

A new invention arrived in Walnut Grove, and everyone wanted to see it.

It was called a talking machine.

It could record a person’s voice and play it back later.

To most people in town, it felt like magic.

Laura Ingalls was amazed.

She loved hearing voices come out of the machine. Mary thought it was clever.

Even Charles smiled when he heard his own voice played back.

But Nellie Oleson saw something different.

She saw a chance to cause trouble.

Around the same time, a kind boy named Jason came to Walnut Grove.

He was polite, handsome, and friendly.

Laura liked him right away, and Jason seemed to enjoy talking with her too.

Nellie noticed this.

She became jealous.

Nellie wanted Jason to like her instead.

She tried to impress him with her nice clothes, her family’s store, and her proud attitude.

But Jason liked Laura’s honest and simple way more.

This made Nellie angry.

One day, Nellie secretly used the talking machine.

She recorded Laura’s voice when Laura was talking casually.

Then Nellie twisted the words to make it sound like Laura was saying something mean about Jason.

Later, Nellie played the recording for him.

Jason heard Laura’s voice and believed it.

His face changed. He felt hurt and embarrassed.

When Laura saw him later, he acted cold and distant.

Laura did not understand what happened.

She only knew that someone had turned Jason against her.

And deep in her heart, she knew Nellie was behind it.

The Talking Machine – Part 2

Laura tried to speak with Jason, but he avoided her.

Finally, she asked him what was wrong.

Jason told her he had heard her voice on the talking machine.

He said she had laughed at him and said she did not really like him.

Laura was shocked.

“I never said that,” she said.

Jason wanted to believe her, but he had heard her voice himself.

Laura went home upset. She told Pa everything.

Charles listened carefully. He knew Laura was telling the truth.

He also knew machines could repeat voices, but people could still use them in dishonest ways.

The next day, Charles and Laura went to Oleson’s Mercantile.

Nellie acted innocent, but she became nervous when Charles asked about the recording.

Nels Oleson also began to suspect something was wrong.

Soon, the truth came out.

Nellie had recorded Laura’s words at different times and used them to make a false message.

Laura had never insulted Jason at all.

Jason felt ashamed.

“I’m sorry, Laura,” he said. “I should have trusted you.”

Laura forgave him, but she was still hurt.

Nellie was forced to apologize.

Mrs. Oleson tried to defend her daughter at first, but even she could not deny what Nellie had done.

In the end, everyone in Walnut Grove learned an important lesson.

A machine can repeat a voice, but it cannot tell the whole truth.

People must listen with their hearts, not only their ears.

Laura and Jason became friends again, and Nellie learned that lies may work for a little while, but the truth always finds its way out.
