If I Should Wake Before I Die
Amy Hearn sat alone on her porch, watching the sun settle over Walnut Grove. In a few weeks she would turn eighty years old, yet the house felt emptier than ever. Her children lived far away now. Her grandchildren had grown up. Months passed without a visit.
“They’re all too busy,” she sighed.
But Amy missed them terribly. More than anything, she wanted to see her family gathered together once again, laughing around her table as they had years before.
One afternoon, an idea came to her.
“If my family won’t come for my birthday,” she told Doc Baker with a twinkle in her eye, “perhaps they’ll come for my funeral.”
Doc Baker nearly dropped his medical bag.
“Amy Hearn! That’s a terrible idea.”
But Amy was determined.
Reluctantly, and with much protest, Doc Baker and the Ingalls family helped spread the news that Amy was gravely ill. Soon letters and telegrams traveled across the country.
The response was immediate.
Children, grandchildren, and relatives rushed to Walnut Grove. Wagons arrived one after another. The little house that had stood silent for so long suddenly overflowed with voices.
Amy could barely contain her happiness.
Then came the surprise.
Instead of a funeral, the family found the dining room decorated with flowers, cakes, candles, and a banner that read:
“HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY, AMY!”
The room fell silent.
At first, her children were shocked and even angry. They felt deceived. But as Amy spoke, tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t want your sympathy,” she said softly. “I wanted your company. I wanted one more chance to have my family together while I was still here to enjoy it.”
The words struck every heart in the room.
One by one, her children realized how much time had slipped away. They had assumed there would always be another visit, another holiday, another year.
That evening, anger turned to laughter.
Stories were shared. Old memories were retold. Grandchildren listened to tales they had never heard before. The birthday celebration became everything Amy had hoped for.
As the candles flickered on her cake, Amy looked around the crowded room and smiled.
For one precious night, her family was together again.
And that, she thought, was worth more than any birthday present in the world.
